🕯️ Telford Fire Company Remembers Fallen Idaho Firefighters
Yesterday, our hearts were shattered by the news of a senseless, violent attack targeting firefighters responding to a wildfire on Canfield Mountain, just north of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Two firefighters were tragically killed, and a third was seriously injured during what authorities now believe was a carefully orchestrated sniper ambush—the blaze itself used as bait to draw emergency crews into the line of fire.
🧑🚒 Who We Lost
-
One firefighter was from the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department, the other from Kootenai County Fire & Rescue.
-
A third firefighter from Coeur d’Alene was gravely wounded but is currently listed in stable condition after surgery.
⚠️ The Incident
-
Crews responded to a brush fire around 1:30 PM. Less than an hour later, they were met with gunfire from a concealed assailant .
-
Authorities believe the fire was deliberately started to lure firefighters into a deadly ambush. The suspect was later found deceased in the woods, still armed.
-
Local law enforcement, including SWAT teams and support from the FBI, engaged the suspect until law enforcement recovered his body and eventually lifted the shelter-in-place order .
🇺🇸 Community & State Response
-
Idaho Governor Brad Little condemned the attack as “a heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters” and urged state residents to pray for the fallen and their families.
-
A multi-state emergency response team secured the area, managing the remaining wildfire and coordinating a helicopter-assisted operation involving around 300 law enforcement officers.
