🚨 What You Should Do If You See Emergency Lights

Seeing flashing red, blue, or amber lights on the road means it’s time to act fast—but smart. Whether it’s a fire truck, police car, ambulance, or a roadside emergency crew, how you respond can make a critical difference.

First and foremost, slow down and assess the situation. If the emergency vehicle is approaching from behind with lights and sirens, pull over to the right side of the road and stop—only proceed when it’s safe and the vehicle has passed. Never slam on your brakes or stop in the middle of the road, as this can cause confusion or accidents.

If you see emergency lights ahead—such as at an accident scene, fire, or roadside stop—reduce your speed immediately and be alert. Move over to give the responders space if your state has a “Move Over Law” (many do). If you can’t change lanes, slow down significantly and pass with caution.

Always stay focused and avoid distractions like your phone or loud music. Emergency scenes can change quickly, and responders may be on foot near traffic. Carefully follow any directions given to you by first responders.  Pay close attention to YOUR actions and do not be distracted by the surrounding activities.

Lastly, remember: those flashing lights mean someone may be injured, in danger, or risking their life to help others. Your calm, cautious driving can help keep everyone safe—including you.
