Telford Fire Company and Perseverance Fire Company Conduct Joint Heavy Equipment Rescue Training
On Tuesday, September 30th, the Telford Fire Company and the Perseverance Fire Company came together for a joint training exercise focused on Heavy Equipment Rescue. This collaborative drill was designed to challenge both departments with a realistic and complex scenario, while also strengthening teamwork and coordination between the two companies.
The training scenario simulated a severe crash on a highway: a loaded 18-wheeler had come to a stop with a minivan behind it. A second tractor-trailer then struck the rear of the minivan, pushing it forward and sandwiching the vehicle between the two 18-wheelers. Inside the van were four occupants who required rescue. To increase the difficulty and realism, the vehicles were placed against a jersey barrier, replicating the confined and hazardous conditions often faced during highway emergencies.
Firefighters from both companies worked side by side, using a variety of specialized tools and techniques. Crews employed hydraulic rescue tools, rotary saws, cribbing, and stabilization equipment to safely extricate the simulated victims. At the same time, personnel provided care for the “patients” throughout the operation, emphasizing the importance of multitasking and coordination during real-world incidents.
One of the key focuses of the training was highlighting the importance of calling in a heavy wrecker as a resource in large-scale vehicle accidents. The ability to incorporate towing and recovery partners into rescue operations is vital when dealing with crashes involving commercial trucks and other heavy vehicles.
The exercise was a true example of teamwork, communication, and dedication between the two fire companies. Working together under challenging conditions not only improved technical skills but also strengthened relationships that will prove invaluable when these companies respond side by side to real emergencies.
The Telford Fire Company extends sincere thanks to Dunnes Towing for setting up the scenario and participating in the exercise, as well as to ESI Equipment Inc. for providing equipment support.
Through realistic training like this, our firefighters are better prepared to respond to emergencies, protect lives, and serve the community when it matters most.
