Each year the nation sets aside a weekend to honor fallen firefighters. Telford Fire Co. Volunteers were honored at Christ Reformed Church at Indian Creek this morning. National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Week End is this weekend May 3-4. Our own Firehouse Chaplain, Barry Lederach, had a chance to speak during the morning service. Here is the message from the service today:
It is a time when our communities can recognize and honor the sacrifices that firefighters have made to make and ensure that their communities and environment are as safe as possible.
This past year 2024, 70 fire personnel have fallen in the line of duty here in the US.
I did some research and found that between 1990 and 2024— 3,905 firefighters died in the line of duty here in the United States. It’s important that we remember them for giving that ultimate sacrifice. And to remember their families. It is also a day in which current and past firefighters can be thanked for their contributions to serving and putting their lives on the line each and every day.
What is a firefighter?
Why do we do it? How important is what we do is.
Firefighting is one of the most critical, challenging, and dangerous professions in the world. It requires individuals to be brave, selfless and committed to serving their communities. Being a firefighter is not just a job; it is a way of life that demands a strong sense of responsibility and dedication to saving lives and property.
The type of person who tends to gravitate towards being a firefighter is someone who loves to help others and has a desire to make a difference in society. They are typically people who are physically fit, mentally tough, and able to work well under stressful conditions. Firefighters also value teamwork and have excellent communication skills, both of which are essential in an emergency situation. Additionally, we are also, trained in providing lifesaving techniques to stabilize a patient till an ambulance arrives. A firefighter must possess exceptional problem-solving skills as they must make quick decisions on the spot while under immense pressure. This job requires an individual to be technologically savvy and able to operate various types of equipment.
Apart from these personal qualities, a firefighter must have educational qualifications and training to be considered for the job. Most individuals who become firefighters typically acquire formal education in fire science, which teaches them about the science behind fire, fire prevention methods, firefighting strategy, and the mechanics of firefighting equipment. Being a firefighter is not just about fighting fires. It requires passion, dedication, physical and mental toughness, teamwork, communication skills, and a commitment to public safety. It is a challenging but it can be incredibly rewarding for those who choose to pursue it. Being a firefighter is a physically and mentally demanding job. It requires an immense amount of physical strength, endurance, and resilience to cope with the challenges of the job. While it can be incredibly rewarding, it is also a job that can take a toll on the body, resulting in a range of long-term health problems. Hence, it is essential that firefighters take care of their physical and mental health and receive the necessary training, equipment, and support to perform their jobs safely and efficiently.
So I hope this information helps you understand what and how much is involved in being a first responder. And that brings us back to this weekend, and why we are here this morning, a time to remember those that gave that ultimate sacrifice.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, this weekend we gather across the nation and around the world to honor the heroic legacy of our fallen firefighters.
We thank You for the bravery and selflessness they demonstrated throughout their service. Their dedication to protecting lives and property serves as an inspiration to us all. May their memory continue to shine brightly in our hearts, motivating us to live with courage and compassion.
As we celebrate their life, we pray for strength and comfort for their loved ones.
May their legacy endure and their impact be forever remembered.
And we pray for all first responders that answer the call without hesitation. Protect them, put your garden angles around them watch over them and bring them home safely to their love ones.
We ask this all in the name of our Lord Jesus Crist. Amen
A few of our active firefighters along with their family that could join us this morning.
