Winter Storm Hernando — Important Safety Update

Good evening everyone, and apologies for the late post.

As we prepare for Winter Storm Hernando, please be aware that the National Weather Service has placed our area under a Blizzard Warning. Winds are expected to increase significantly this evening and persist through the overnight hours, leading to near whiteout conditions and dangerously low visibility.

Safety Reminders

Please keep the following in mind as conditions worsen:

  • Blowing Snow and Ventilation:
Snow drifts can block exterior exhaust vents, preventing proper ventilation and causing dangerous carbon monoxide buildup inside homes.
  • Power Outages:
Power disruptions are likely overnight. Be prepared for several hours without electricity, heat, or appliance use.
Keep extra supplies on hand, and have a backup way to monitor when power returns.
  • Generator Safety:
Heavy snow can clog generators and create fire hazards. Always keep generators at least 20 feet away from homes or businesses and ensure proper ventilation.
  • Impassable Roads:
Expect travel difficulties — roads, driveways, and walkways may become impassable at times, delaying emergency response.
Please be patient with crews working to reach you and keep house numbers visible for responders.
  • Travel Advisory:
Avoid all unnecessary travel during the overnight and early morning hours. Stay off the roads if possible!

After the Storm

When conditions improve, please help us by clearing snow from around fire hydrants in your neighborhood. Maintain a 3-foot by 3-foot area to ensure firefighters have quick and safe access in an emergency — those seconds truly matter.

Please stay safe, stay warm, and take care of each other tonight.
